This is the tank in my office.

How is that auto water changes work? I always wanted to build an automated water change system...

Water Change

The water change consists of a reef tank, a 30 gal tank, heater, fresh water supply, waste water drain, sprinkler valve, pump start relay, slient giant pump, sprinkler controller and two float valves. The reef tank is set up so one over flow is dedicated to the water change with the large opening fitted with a stand pipe connected to a floor drain behind the tank. It is also fitted with a fill pipe connected to the pump in the lower 30 gal tank.

The sprinker controller is set to 8:00am each day, cycle one sends 24VDC thru the lower float valve in the 30 gal tank (now full) pumping water into the main tank until the float opens the 24 VDC curcuit. Water pumped in displaces old water which overflows to the drain like an overflowing bathtub. Cycle two now opens the sprinkler valve which fill the 30 gal storage tank until the upper float open the 24VDC curcuit. The water in the holding tank off gasses and is heated for 24 hours when it all happens again.
